Silvio Tosatto was born in Bressanone on December 21 1974 and raised between Germany, where he spent over twenty years in different cities, Rome and Buenos Aires. He graduated in July 1998 in Wirtschaftsinformatik (Computer Science and Business adiministration) from the University of Mannheim, specializing in operations research and optimization. He obtained his Dr.rer.nat. (PhD) in Bioinformatics from the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Mannheim with the grade magna cum laude. Teaching in Mannheim included the part on Protein Structure of the Bioinformatics course for the degree in Informatics and for the master in Bioinformatics from the University of Heidelberg. Having requested a position for the 'Rientro dei Cervelli', he transfers to the University of Padova in May 2002. After spending a year as PostDoc there in the 'Centro di Ricerca Interdipartimentale per le Biotecnologie Innovative' (CRIBI), awaiting approval for the contract, in May 2003 he starts working as 'Rientro dei Cervelli' Adjunct Professor at the Biology Department. Having become the principal investigator for the newly created BioComputing laboratory, he currently teaches a fundamental course on Bioinformatics for the second year in the first-level degree (Bachelor) in Molecular Biology as well as an optional course for the second year of the second-level degree (Master) in Molecular Biology. Author of numerous publications and referee for prestigious international journals, since 2004 he is co-founder of the monthly P2P seminar series and two symposia on Protein Structure and Function. Since 2000 he participates with good results in the biannual 'Critical Assessment of Techniques for protein Structure Prediction' (CASP), first as group leader for the best German group (2000) and then as best Italian group (from 2002).
